i would have to agree with dnorris, to claim a motor is to say " i'm to dumb to build it and fiqure out how to do it on my own, so i'll just buy yours." if it was any one other than nick they wouldn't have done it. how can someone be so hated for just being a good builder and smart driver? from what i have seen at derbys nick would give parts and help to any one that needs it, he's just not liked because he wins. does he cheat? but if he does and still passes tech is that his fault? i think not.several inspection crews nation wide have inspected his cars and he still gets in. who ever is on a winning streak is allways a cheater right? if ANYONE cheats and passes tech it's not the drivers fault, all the fingers should be pointed at the inspectors for not stop'n it. if some one beats me i go home and try harder to make my game better.
if it was a high $ motor do you really think nick would have let it go for $600? all he had to do was forfeit his spot and his $250 winnings for 3rd and he could keep the motor. the motor obviously wasn't worth more than $600 to him. i simply think that just because it was nick they thought they were getting something. oh and how could he have dropped nuts and bolts in the intake when the air cleaner and oil cap was still on the motor and never removed? the cops were there weren't they? why try to make false statements?

Just to clear things up the bolts we dropped by the the guys helping me pull the motor. The statement was made because people thought I didn't know and would ruin the motor. I will be sure to check that when I have it all torn down. It all comes down to rules they are there for a reason like it or not! I will post a parts list as I tear the motor down and see if it was worth the 600.
So far I see 150 headers 200 intake 275 for the carb it's no stock 2 jet. I noticed roller rockers when I had the valve cover off today. And then there's the 3speed attached to it. It ads up quick.
But I really never cared about the motor I will keep running stuff I would help someone pull if they claimed it. Heck I would take 500 and be happy. Just really want to see the class stay fun and not get ruined by big money all over again.

IT IS NO " BITCH MOVE" TO CLAIM AN ENGINE WHEN DOING SO IS ALLOWED. OBVIOUSLY ROLLER ROCKERS AND AN AFTERMARKET INTAKE AND REWORKED CARB ARE NOT "FACTORY STOCK", SO IN REALITY HE HAS NO ONE TO BLAME BUT HIMSELF FOR TRYING TO SLIDE ONE BY. KIND OF LIKE WHEN HE GOT LOADED AT THE TEAM SHOW FOR HAVE A REINFORCED FIREWALL....DONT FORGET VALUE OF THE 3 SPEED-$125, PLUS BELLHOUSING, CLUTCH AND PRESSURE PLATE...PROBABLY $200-$300 FUNNY THING IS I JUST SOLD A COMPLETE RUNNING 76 CHEVY 350 ENGINE TO A FELLOW DERBIER THIS AFTERNOON FOR $275.00, IM SURE HE WOULD GLADLY TAKE 6 BILLS FOR IT IT IT EVER GETS CLAIMED..... BOTTOM LINE IS, IF YOU TRY TO SKIRT THE RULES AND KNOW FULL WELL YOU COULD GET CLAIMED THEN YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF... NEXT TIME YOU INSTALL A NOPN-STOCK ENGINE INTO A CAR THAT RUNS WITH RULES THAT READ " ENGINE CAN BE CLAIMED" REALIZE THAT THEY MEAN IT. PROPS TO THE PROMOTER FOR STICKING TO HIS RULES......

I don't hardly think it was a white trash move. Most white trash couldn't afford to get in the derby let alone give up $600 on a motor. It's a bad deal and I'd be pissed if I were nick but it is what it is. It's a claimed class and the way I see it he should have never been let in with a 3 speed. Nothing against nick but if they want a stock show then keep it stock. But there's no reason for everyone to get pissed we all new it could happen and now that some one did it they are the bad people. Not hardly. If it would have been some else other then nick we wouldn't be talking about it right now so everyone just needs to move on.

Well It doesn't take much to cause a little drama in Douglas county does it?? I wasn't trying to slide anything by, I knew there was a claim rule and me and several friends talked about it before the derby and said that it would probably get claimed because someone would think it was on of my good motors. As far as that goes I didn't think they would go with carb or headers as I had seen that in the rules at one point but apparently it was taken out or something, because about 20 other people told me they had seen the same thing and wondered why they were staying on the motor. With those included im sure Robbie got his $600 worth. The motor was a fairly stock 350 that I built 10 years ago, it was out of a 76 impala with about 100 miles on it. It was cleaned up and installed new rings, bearings and gaskets, put a new RV cam in it, Bought an aluminum intake at the swap meet and put on it, and since I was young and thought it was cool it had to get roller tip rockers and chrome valve covers. The motor has ran somewhere around 50 derbys and won around $30,000 and never been apart, the last time I had ran it was when I won Emporia in 2010 and the motor got hot enough to melt the stickers on the oil filter and melt the plastic seal on the drain plug and was boiling oil out of the plug. Had been setting on the stand ever since. I got the caprice cheap so figured I would stick this motor in the car and see how it still ran, It was definatly lacking in power but did keep starting time and time again. If I thought the motor was worth any more than $600 I would have just loaded the car and not let it go. As far as the 3 speed that is what broke and took me out in 3rd place, It broke the tailshaft in half. The bellhousing was a stock cast bellhousing that a friend had given me earlier in the week since Jay told me it would have to be stock and not a scattershield. The clutch is a stock clutch that was also 10 years old, there was a hydraulic throwout bearing also. Like I said probably about $600 worth of stuff so he got his moneys worth. As far as any cheating the inspectors could tell exactly what the motor was and they never questioned it a bit.
Jon, I never got loaded at a team show for having a reinforced firewall, you should really get your facts straight before you go running at the mouth. But I guess that is all you do well. The car that I got loaded at the Columbus, NE Team show in 2010/11 had the firewall cut out of it because you couldn't run Distributor protectors, so id say you have no clue what you are talking about!
As far as the derby goes it seemed to be the same old thing, Jay changed the rules the week of the derby to say you Must be DOT tires and that AG, forklift, and doubled tires were not allowed. But then this was changed yet again at the derby and any tires were allowed. And then I also seen that they allowed floor mounted aftermarket gas pedals in cars in the hobo class.
The Hobo Results were 1st Stephens (not sure of his first name but its Pete's boy) 2nd Kellen Johnson

Nick is right about the tire rule and my apparent "same old thing". The rules read one way and I was telling people another thing. It was pointed out to me and I had to eat my words and admit fault. That one is on me... This will be rectified for next year along with the wording of the claim rule (assuming I have a "next year").
I read last years rules and they are the same as this year as far as the claim goes. I believe we discussed the header and carb deal when I was first looking at running a hobo class, but it has never been in the rules that I can find. Maybe next year I'll just make a claim for the entire car.
As far as the gas pedal goes, you are right there again, but when somebody tells me they changed the intake over to a carb and it had an electric gas pedal on it, what would your suggestion be for them to use? I'm all ears...
I made mistakes and I stand behind them. The funny thing is, I'll make more and it's just the way it is. Nobody is perfect. If you want the job of writing rules, checking cars, standing on the blocks, and taking shit from everybody with an opinion, please feel free to make your pitch to the fairboard and take my job. It's yours...I won't fight you for it. Being the head official is a bit like being the President of the United States. Everybody has an opinion about how YOU should be doing it, but nobody wants the job. -Jay

I think jay does a hell of a job he was consistent on inspections, everyone cut and cut and cut and cut until there car was to the rules I ve never had a problem with the guy and this year was one of the bigger Lawrence shows in a wile. The only negative thing I had to say about the derby was that the Doherty boys cars were and have been for a long time entirely to hard especially how they hold it to the wood and use the front of them things all night! As far as the situation with nic goes, the guy has a right to be pissed it seems every year someone's try in to pick on him but if you actually know nic and have hung around nic like someone said earlier he's the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back.

[ Being the head official is a bit like being the President of the United States. Everybody has an opinion about how YOU should be doing it, but nobody wants the job. -Jay[/quote] couldn't agree more! by no means was i say'n you did something wrong Jay. as an inspector we all have stuff slip by us but we cant spend 2hrs per car can we? rules are there for EVERY builder to build the same car, if you dont take full advantage of what the rules allow you as a builder to do thats YOUR fault not the inspection crew or the other builders. people build hard ( John, Rich, Clint, Chase, Hugh, Shann, Jamie, Nick, and others) does that make them cheaters? i think not. these drivers build multiple cars per yr and support multiple shows and a few people that run 1-2 shows per year wonder why they're better than them. it was a great show. funny how it took 3days for the main event to ever come up on here. will it happen next yr, yes. will jay be back, yes. will the fans be there, yes. will old and new drivers show up, yes. will the drama ever stop, NO!. its a f'ing derby isn't it? robbie, thanks for clearing up the fact that it wasn't nick that put the bolts in the intake. by your post it sounded like that was what you were trying to make others think.
