the child takes a space and there is a limited number of spaces. economics! in order to maximize profits this is probly needed, now if you factor in how many hot dogs the child eats in comparison to a 14 year old, the two year old would not be the highest profit person through the gate. face it the baby has bad demographics. as a driver could you get to the food stand? if you had to pay extra to get to the grandstands to buy food, they worked the pigeon for all they could get. i think its all ok because county fairs are not about people. they are about econmics. i dont know if im jokeing or not. jim

Constructive criticism is good. We can handle that. Hopefully I can hit on every comment so far.
Derbies are expensive and getting more expensive by the year. Not only to build a competitive car but also to put the show on. I am probably one of the few in our area that has actually seen all aspects. I've built and derbied cars for 12 yrs, been an official, and now seen what it takes to promote and put on a show. Its not easy for any of us. We all have seen car counts dwindle over the years. The 2011 season has been one of the lowest counts all across KS on record and at the same time prize money and other expenses including costs to build cars keeps going up. Not the best thing for the sport imo. So all of us have to find a compromise somewhere. Anyways....
I agree 100% that without the drivers there is no show. You guys make it happen. On the same token, without the fan's buying tickets to pay for all the operating costs and prize money, there is no show. A teeter totter for sure. In years past, our Fair Board not only relied on monies brought in from tickets, pit passes, and car registration's to pay for the show, we hoped to have extra to help run other expenses of our County Fair. This money usually is spent towards our 4H kids and their needs. Take a look around, there is a lot going on at the Fair. The Fair and its Events has to be self sufficient. We get some help from the County Commissioners, but its just a drop in the bucket of the total operating costs. Board members dont get paid, all volunteer's and we all put 100's and 100's of hours into it. Ok, enough of that.
I will take back to the board about the child ticket costs. Maybe we can agree to lower the price on child tickets and also take into consideration babies too. If I remember correctly this happened because adults were buying child tickets and were getting past the gates on a cheap ticket. I could be wrong on that. Fans also rub off stamps onto each other. Anything to see a great show! Also, gate tickets have never been raised, it has been pretty much the same cost for a long time. We dont want to raise ticket prices either. And wont.
As Jim said, its all about economic's. Since grandstand tickets sales is all we get now something else down the line could suffer, like total pay out. I dont want that but we will be working on other ways to get more prize money. So if any of you know of any sponsors that DO NOT participate in the 4H Livestock Auction (cant double dip or the kid's pay the price) let me know so we can work on that.
We have tried for many years to get another grandstand into the pit area. The Board cannot afford to purchase grandstand's and the County has always turned down the purchase too since it is a one night show that only benefits the Fair. We have been scratching our heads on that one for a long time. I will look into reorganizing the pit grandstand area to make it more comfortable and feasible. Maybe driver families can bring lawn chairs and this could be a solution for awhile to relieve the pressure from the pit grandstand. Another idea is to let the drivers families into the fan grandstands with a pit pass after the general public has been seated. This ensure's we have our space for ticket sales. But then again, there may not be enough room left. Something to ponder.
Oh, the 4H concession stand trailer was located on the NE corner of the grounds and was accessible to both drivers/pit crew's and the fan's. Any profits goes to 4H, the Board doesn't see a dime of this. And I must agree once again. Pork is where its at!
Lets keep working together. Keep up the good, constructive criticism and idea's.
Cheers, Andy

I know that you said that the pit passes were out of control of the fair board- but it was ridiculous to have to pay $20 for a 2 year old to come back there and we had no other option. There was no way that we were giving her bracelet to anyone else or rubbing off a stamp to someone else's hand- the bracelet remained on her all night. The lady that sold me the pit pass for my daughter actually said that they charge for kids to discourage people from buying them- never been told that before. Also, as I am paying $20 for my 2 year old to come back with me a man and his wife get 2 bracelets for free, because they were related to someone on the fair board.
I would also agree that the area for pit members to sit is really small and it's hard to film from over there, because at the highest point you are right in line with the lights.

Maybe a 2nd derby needs to be run sometime in the fall to help raise money and ease the stress. I know Baker mentioned a 2 man team derby.

Good possibility Jamie. Now that everyone knows where each other is coming from its only going to get better. No worries, its going to all work out great.

You're right Paul...because Johnson County charges $12 for babies and adults.

It looks like having R&R Promotions come in has gotten the drivers talking with the fair board on issue's that can be worked out for the future.
I've spoken with the fair board about having a 2nd event, either spring or fall.
Fair and R&R have just some minor things to work out between us, but we'll work together to get this taken care of between us for next year.
Now, Some of you haven't been to an R&R event before, so you might not know how we do things.
I always try to work with the driver so they can compete. But when it's over board, they don't get to run. Most of you saw that this year.
I felt most of you thought the inspection were great and some of you posted before the event that things probly won't be any different. Well, I believe we proved you wrong on that. Things were and will be different!
If you don't understand something about R&R rules, pick up the phone and call me!
We work with the driver and give them the respect as needed, but in return you need to respect us by not going over board. You as driver's can help make thing more smooth for us during inspection by staying within the rules.
You know what is too much, so don't complain when we make you change it. As stated again, we inspect every car equal and too the rules.
I've got some ideas and plans for the future of Lawrence demo derby.
I(R&R) was the first to promote a team demo derby and now look at what that has become. I've got another idea that I might be able to make our sport move forward. I'll let everyone in on it once we have worked out another contract with Douglas County Fair Board.
Thanks, Rob Baker
