Harvey County Derby
(Revised 7/18/12)
Entries are open to men and women who have a valid driver’s license. In the interest of safety and in fairness to all contestants, the following rules and regulations will prevail:
DRIVERS ENTRY AND FEES:
1. All drivers and pit crews must be 18 years of age or have a notarized permit by a parent or guardian. ID must be shown by both the minor and signing adult at check in. Notary paper work must be done prior to entry! There will be no notary available at the derby.
2. All drivers and pit crew must sign a release form prior to derby.
3. Drivers must furnish his/her own car.
4. A maximum of six (6) sponsors per car will be listed in the program. Entry must be in by 8:00 AM the Wed. before the derby to be listed in the program.
5. Drivers may enter each heat but must have a different car for each heat.
6. Each car will pay an entry fee. The entry fee will include two pit passes, one driver & one car. The fee is as follows - $35 up until 8:00 AM Wed. any registration received after 8:00 AM Wed. including the day of the derby will pay an additional $5 = $40.
7. Additional pit passes will be available for $20 with a wrist band or $30 with a t-shirt.
8. Anyone entering the pit area must provide a valid state ID.
9. **NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 16 WILL BE ADMIDTED TO THE PIT AREA AT ANYTIME BETWEEN 11AM TO THE END OF THE DERBY! Anyone under the age of 18 must have notarized paper work with them at the time of check in along with the signing adult & both presenting a valid ID.

HEATS:
The derby will consist of heats and consolation qualifying heats. The last two (2) active cars and drivers in each heat will comprise the feature cars and drivers. No changing of drivers or cars for the feature will be allowed. If the driver qualifies in more than one car they must pick the one car they will drive in the feature.
Consolation:
Any car PARTICIPATING in a previous heat is eligible for the consolation heat. The last three (3) active cars and drivers in the consolation heat are eligible for the feature race.
THIS PROGRAM IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE BY THE OFFICIAL WITHOUT NOTICE
PARTICIPATION REGULATIONS:
1. Drivers may maneuver forward and/or backward.
2. NO deliberate head on hitting OR the opponents driver’s door hitting. This could result in black flag. Repeat offenders will be disqualified from the final.
3. Any open doors, car roll over, hung up on burm/wall will be disqualified. If any of these occur in the heat you may fix it and return to the consolation heat specified to you.
4. If the driver does not hit another car aggressively within forty-five (45) seconds that driver will be disqualified.
5. DO NOT play possum & NO TEAM DRIVING!
6. Drivers must attend a drivers meeting approximately one-half hour prior to the start of the derby.
7. All protests must be submitted by a driver in writing to the official with a minimum of five (5) driver’s signatures along with $50. If the car is found to have cheated the $50 will be returned. If the car is found to be legal, the $50 will be given to the driver in question.
8. No pit persons allowed in show arena during a heat.
9. Cars must be inspected and in perspective heat line up between 12 noon and 4:30 PM. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE. The Derby will start at 6:30 PM.
10. If any car is found to be illegal during inspection they get two chances to fix it correctly, the THIRD time the car has to be inspected it will cost $50 for it to be looked at again.
11. All cars will go directly to their heat line up and will not be worked on after passing inspection. If a flat tire needs to be fixed an official must be present, NO EXCEPTIONS. (Make sure you fill with fuel prior to inspection)
12. No drivers or pit crew members under the influence of liquor or any illegal substance will be allowed to participate or enter the exhibition area. County and Sate Law prohibit the consumption or possession of any alcoholic beverage or cereal malt beverages on property owned by city, state or governmental subdivision.
13. Only one (1) work vehicle per car entry in pit area. NO TRAILERS. Please drop trailers outside of pit area away from spectator parking.
14. Cars are subject to re-inspection before prize money or trophies are handed out. THE TOP FIVE (5) CARS WILL NOT LEAVE THE ARENA AFTER THE FINAL. THESE CARS WILL BE INSPECTED AGAIN BY OFFICIAL AND DRIVER ONLY, BEFORE ANY PRIZE MONEY IS AWARDED.
15. Equipment can only help with pulling cars in and out of arena and loading. They can not help with fixing car or touching the car in any other way. If used for fixing the car in any way you will be disqualified.
16. If you have any questions give us a call. If the rules don’t say it, don’t do it. Official’s decisions are final!
PREPARATION OF CARS:
1. American cars or station wagons are allowed. NO imperials or imperial sub-frames. NO Re-Stubbing is allowed, must be like models example – GM to GM, Ford to Ford, etc. must be clean. Hearse, jeeps, trucks, carryalls, convertibles or ambulances are not permitted. Any combination of engine may occur with the exception of diesels (which are not allowed) the #2 spark plug needs to be in line with the A-arm.
2. Slogans, advertising or printing may be placed anywhere on the car except front doors and roof. Drivers name and number must be on both front doors and on the roof sign maximum of 24” X 24”, this roof sign IS MANDATORY and may be welded on the roll bar across the top of car. Use your choice of numbers. No profanity of any kind can be on car.
3. Driver’s door must be reinforced. Reinforcement may go no more than 12” from the front and back side of door seam. Minimum length no less than 6” in front or back of driver’s door and ½” X 4” steel plate. 4” channel iron is a suggestion. All door seams may be welded inside and out. NO GRADER BLADES.
4. Bracing on driver’s door may not stick out more than 2” and corners must be rounded or angled.
5. Cage may be constructed 1 of 2 ways
OPTION 1
Cage is allowed two side bars max, size 6 inch tubing or channel. Maximum. of three cross bars allowed no larger than 5 inches in diameter , no curved dash bars, must be min. 6 inches from center of dash, must be min. 10 inches from floor, no higher than bottom of side windows, rear bar may attach to front side of inner rear tire well, four down legs allowed six inches wide max. Bars may attach to body, may not be within 4 inches of body mount or body mount plate. Dash bar must be five inches (5”) away from distributor protector.
OPTION 2
You are allowed 2 side bars 60" max and 2 cross bars. You are allowed a gas tank protector 6X24 inches may be 1.5"s from back seat panel but may not be attached to back seat panel, may attach to rear seat pipe. Dash bar must be five inches (5”) away from distributor protector.
Halo bar may be added to cage 5 inch max diameter, may go to floor pan sheet metal but not to frame, must remain vertical (NO TILTING) within 12 inches of drivers seat, may only be attached to roof with two bolts.
Front windshield bars only, 2 ½ inch max diameter, two bars only, may not extend more than 4 inches past windshield opening; all crossbars must be within windshield opening. The front bars are a 14" min apart. Rear window protector will be either 9 wire or max of 3/8 chain not welded solid. You are allowed 3" max retaining plate to attach rear window protector to. Distributor protectors allowed but must remain five inches (5”) from dash bar. There must be a hole in the firewall the size of the distributor protector.
6. Working safety belts/harness and helmets are required. The seat belt and helmet MUST be on at all times while in the arena, even if car is not running. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you are caught not wearing your seat belt or helmet, the first time you get a warning, the next time you are caught you will be disqualified.
7. Passenger car and truck tires (highway use tires only) will be allowed. 15” DOT approved rims maximum. No studs or chains, no liquid. Anyone found with liquid in the tires will be disqualified. Paddle tire or fork lift tire on front only.
8. No special bumpers, extra weights, trailer hitches, roll bars, special lifts, blocks, shackles or any other reinforcements, accept the driver’s door. Bumpers may be welded. Bumpers and fenders may be trimmed. You may have 2 straps from bumper to radiator core support 2” wide 18” long ¼ thick. Fenders may be bolted or welded no more than seven (7) 3/8” bolts per wheel well. You may beat the seams down and weld them but must be able to see inside. CANNOT ADD METAL. You may weld bumper brackets or towers to the frame. You may weld bumper brackets and shocks to the bumper. You may weld shocks to the shock towers. You may collapse shocks. You may bolt shocks to the towers with a ½” bolt or less. It must be done vertically. When welding bumpers, shocks, and brackets. DO NOT ADD ANY METAL.
9. All inside door and door seams including driver’s door wagon gates and trunks may be welded solid, chained, or bolted shut. No straps, plates, or pipes can be welded from roof to the truck. Rusted or pre ran cars may patch a hole in the body of the car but not replace the inside of the car. If you patch a hole you must use sheet metal that makes up the original car body. This patch may overlap the outside of the whole 2-4”. Don’t push your luck. Plates used to patch the hole may not overlap the each other. This does not mean you can weld on the frame. No doubling of sheet metal skin. WELDING ON SEAMS IS OKAY, BUT DO NOT ADD SHEET METAL. Every car will have a hole drilled into it.
10. Hood must have two (2) fire holes large enough for a fire extinguisher. You may use no more than 16 1/4 inch bolts no longer than 1” to support around the fire holes in the hood. Hoods may be bolted, chained, or welded solid. Six bolts no bigger than 1” can be used for tie downs. The front two may be allowed to go through frame. The remaining four bolts can only be sheet metal to sheet metal. No gusseting of hood bolts or hood washers can be longer than 5” in diameter and ¼” thick. If you weld your hood solid you cannot have tie downs. The hood may be folded over the front of the car with 2 straps but can’t weld hood to the bumper.
11. Radiators and fans may be removed but not relocated. No auxiliary cooling systems may be added with the exception of electric fans. Any screen used to protect the radiator and fan may be no larger than hail screen. No expanded material, etc. allowed. No flammable liquid of any kind will be allowed. The transmission coolers must be secured and high pressure hoses must be used for safety and be securely mounted. All batteries, fuel tanks, and transmission coolers must be covered.
12. Absolutely no plastic tanks! Boat tanks make excellent substitutions. Tanks must be moved to back seat area. Tanks must be secured to floor with straps, chains or bolts. No bungee cords, nylon ties, etc. All fuel hoses must be securely mounted. If electronic fuel pump is used a toggle switch must be used that is labeled on and off. Maximum of six (6) gallons of fuel in a tank. No alcohol based fuel will be allowed.
13. All fuel connections must be leak free. Fuel lines must run inside the car through the fire wall and must be protected with rubber hose and securely in place. No stock fuel lines on frame rail, all fuel lines must be ran inside car.
14. Batteries must be strapped with metal straps securely to floor. No bungee cords, nylon ties, etc. Battery cables and electrical wires must be protected with rubber hose. All transmission coolers, fuel tanks, and batteries must be covered. A tranny blanket if a standard transmission used. This is for the driver’s safety. To keep any flammable liquids form spraying the drivers or out of the car.
15. All glass, including lights, chrome, pot metal trim, grills, etc. must be removed before reaching the fairgrounds.
16. The inside of all cars MUST be stripped of all burnable materials, except for the padding on the driver’s door, seat and dash.
17. Floor plugs must be knocked out, or drain holes must be clean in the floor. Minimum of four (4) holes visible. All trunks and doors must be empty of debris, spare parts, etc.
18. Safety straps from roof to dash are mandatory. They can be ¼” thick X 1”. At least one (1) no more than three (3) straps from roof to firewall. Right side must left open. Vertical bars only from dash to roof, no horizontal bars.
19. You may re-clamp a max of 7 leafs 4 clamps per side homemade or factory. Homemade clamps not to exceed 2” X 4” X ¼”. You may weld leaf spring mounting brackets to prevent them from becoming unbolted. You may loop a chain or wire from the rear end to the frame, but only in two (2) places per side. No modifications to springs. Run what came factory for that car. No coil to leaf spring conversions. Rear control arms may not be reinforced. They may be shortened or lengthened, but do not add metal. A arms may be welded down.
20. Rear ends must be no more than 5 lugs. No truck rear ends larger than ½ ton.
21. The rubber body mounts may be pulled out and replaced with a bolt no larger than ¾” and a washer no larger than 4”X4”X1/4”. Body bolts may not pass completely through the frame except for the two (2) hood bolts with is allowed, only (1) washer 3”X3”X1/4” will be allowed inside the frame. No other part of the body bolt may be inside of the frame. Do not add extra body bolts.
22. No welding on frame, with the exception of the firewall forward only on top and bottom seams. (1/2”) wide) absolutely no welding on frames or body unless specified. You must leave factory frame holes open.
23. All cars may have (8) plates 4”X4”X1/4”. These plates may not run continuous; there must be a gap of at least 2” between plates. NO EXCEPTIONS. If extra plates are put on they will be cut off not sliced. After your heat you may add (2) more plates.
24. No reinforcements allowed other than specified. Any added metal to reinforce the car is illegal. Do not add any metal.
25. You can have 9 wire in two (2) spots per window opening four (4) strands. Four (4) strands of 9 wire frame to frame behind rear tires. AFTER your heat 9 wire is unlimited.
26. THE TOP FIVE CARS WILL BE INSPECTED AFTER THE FINAL. DO NOT LEAVE THE ARENA IF YOU ARE A DRIVE OF ONE OF THESE CARS.
27. Official’s decisions are FINAL! If there is an altercation with an official you will be removed from the derby arena and or pit area and not be able to return.
REMOVAL OF CARS
Each driver must remove his/her car from the fairgrounds within 12 hours of the end of the derby. Any cars remaining on the fairgrounds more than 12 hours will become property of the Free Fair Association.

18. Safety straps from roof to dash are mandatory. They can be ¼” thick X 1”. At least one (1) no more than three (3) straps from roof to firewall. Right side must left open. Vertical bars only from dash to roof, no horizontal bars.
19. You may re-clamp a max of 7 leafs 4 clamps per side homemade or factory. Homemade clamps not to exceed 2” X 4” X ¼”. You may weld leaf spring mounting brackets to prevent them from becoming unbolted. You may loop a chain or wire from the rear end to the frame, but only in two (2) places per side. No modifications to springs. Run what came factory for that car. No coil to leaf spring conversions. Rear control arms may not be reinforced. They may be shortened or lengthened, but do not add metal. A arms may be welded down.
20. Rear ends must be no more than 5 lugs. No truck rear ends larger than ½ ton.
21. The rubber body mounts may be pulled out and replaced with a bolt no larger than ¾” and a washer no larger than 4”X4”X1/4”. Body bolts may not pass completely through the frame except for the two (2) hood bolts with is allowed, only (1) washer 3”X3”X1/4” will be allowed inside the frame. No other part of the body bolt may be inside of the frame. Do not add extra body bolts.
22. No welding on frame, with the exception of the firewall forward only on top and bottom seams. (1/2”) wide) absolutely no welding on frames or body unless specified. You must leave factory frame holes open.
23. All cars may have (8) plates 4”X4”X1/4”. These plates may not run continuous; there must be a gap of at least 2” between plates. NO EXCEPTIONS. If extra plates are put on they will be cut off not sliced. After your heat you may add (2) more plates.
24. No reinforcements allowed other than specified. Any added metal to reinforce the car is illegal. Do not add any metal.
25. You can have 9 wire in two (2) spots per window opening four (4) strands. Four (4) strands of 9 wire frame to frame behind rear tires. AFTER your heat 9 wire is unlimited.
26. THE TOP FIVE CARS WILL BE INSPECTED AFTER THE FINAL. DO NOT LEAVE THE ARENA IF YOU ARE A DRIVE OF ONE OF THESE CARS.
27. Official’s decisions are FINAL! If there is an altercation with an official you will be removed from the derby arena and or pit area and not be able to return.
REMOVAL OF CARS
Each driver must remove his/her car from the fairgrounds within 12 hours of the end of the derby. Any cars remaining on the fairgrounds more than 12 hours will become property of the Free Fair Association.
