Thomas County Free Fair
2012 No Weld Rules & Regulations
**These rules supersede all previous rules used by the Thomas County Fair**
Saturday, July 28th 2012 @ 7pm
Failure to abide by the following rules will result in disqualification
1. All drivers must complete the required registration in its entirety before unloading vehicle.
2. All drivers must be at least 16 years of age.
3. All drivers must wear an approved helmet, eye protection, and seatbelt. Safety gloves, fire
suit, and neck collar are highly recommended. No shorts, cut-offs, etc. permitted. Helmet and
seat belt must be on and fastened securely while in the car and on the track.
4. Good sportsmanship and professional behavior is expected of all drivers and crew members.
Failure to comply with these rules may lead to suspension from the current & future events.
5. There will be absolutely no profane signs or derogatory comments allowed on cars, this is a
family event. Any car displaying such language will not be permitted to compete until it is
removed.
6. No pit-crew member or spectator is allowed on the track at any time.
7. The driver must voice any concerns about the derby only to the officials immediately
following the heat / consolation heats / features. No pit crew or fans will be acknowledged in
a dispute.
Illegal Cars
Any driver that is caught cheating and can not fix the problem before the derby is scheduled to start
will forfeit his/her entry fee no exceptions!
All winning cars will be re-inspected prior to payoff if necessary. Just because it is not listed doesn’t
mean it can be done. Use common sense and good sportsmanship. Don’t waste your time loading a car
up! All rules are under the discretion of the track with SAFETY FIRST in mind.
Procedures
1. You must be in the pit area by 7:00 CST. Cars arriving after this time face the possibility
of not competing at the discretion of track officials.
2. Drivers must pay attention to the flagman at all times, failure to do so may result in
disqualification.
3. Drivers must be aggressive!! This will be enforced by the officials!! Cars cannot sit idle
for more than 2 minutes or they will be DQ’d. Drivers must stay in their cars with seat
belts fastened and helmets on until the demo derby is completed or a red flag is
displayed.
4. No intentional hitting of the driver’s door. Repeat violations will result in
disqualification.
5. When the red flag is displayed all action must come to a stop immediately. Any driver
that does not follow this maybe DQ’d at the official’s discretion. Drivers who are no
longer in competition may get out of their cars at this time when all action has ceased.
6. The Thomas County Fairboard reserves the right to determine the number of events,
amount of cars in each event per night, and the designated payoff.

Car Preparation Rules
1. Vehicle Years and makes
a. Full Size
i. Any make or model of automobile may be entered in the following years.
1. 1980-2002 Fords
2. 1978 and up GM’s (Metric Body Styles Only)
3. 1982 and up Chryslers
ii. Body’s MUST match the frame they are placed on.
iii. No pickups, trucks, carryalls, convertibles, checker cabs, or vans allowed.
b. Compacts
i. Any make or model of car with a wheelbase of 107” or less may be entered
except:
1. Any rear wheel drives
2. Cars having a V8 motor
2. Safety
a. Anything that burns such as the headliner, rear seat, door panels, or carpet must be
removed.
b. All glass must be removed from the car including the headlights, side glass, front and rear
windows, taillights, and all the glass inside of the doors.
c. The original fuel tank must be removed. A metal container or fuel cell must be added,
which has to be mounted behind the driver’s seat. (GAS TANK MUST BE COVERED).
The fuel container must NOT leak (NO EXCEPTIONS).
d. All Freon & Anti-freeze must be drained and removed from car.
e. All chrome stripping and pot metal must be removed along with the hardware from the
doors. A pad on the driver’s door may be placed for protection and an escape hole may be
cut out in the roof of the car above the driver’s seat.
f. The battery must be moved to the passenger side on the front floor of the car. (It must be
securely fastened and covered). A wooden battery box is not allowed for the battery
container. Padding is recommended. Dry cell batteries are preferred. Batteries must be
covered with rubber (inner tube, floor mat, etc.)
g. A driver’s safety belt and chest belt must be installed and used along with a safety
helmet.
h. Driver’s door may be braced:
i. May extend your Driver Door brace along rear door (inside car, see cage rules).
1. May also extend along the door your fuel cell is mounted next too,
preferably your driver’s side rear door.
ii. It is strongly advised to also run an exterior Driver’s Door bar on the outside of
the car fastened securely (No Grader Blades)
iii. Driver’s door may be reinforced between door skins with Concrete, Expanding
Foam, Wood, etc. do whatever you need to feel safe behind Driver’s Door only.
3. Car Preparation
a. ***NO WELD*** means absolutely NO WELDING, even if you have a factory weld
broken or cracked. DO NOT WELD IT!!! No frame seam welding, and NO TILTING
(not even cold bending, tilting, etc.)
b. Unlimited 3/8” bolts, Stamped washers, Chain, and Unlimited #9 wire can be used on
the car as desired.
c. The hood MUST be able to open at tech for inspection.
d. No extra bolts in radiator support, other than the 3/8” bolts permitted.
e. Fender well bolts are permitted (3/8” bolt and stamped fender washers).
f. Vertical bars in the windshield opening are MANDATORY in front of the driver. 2
(two) is minimum, 3 (three) maximum.
i. These bars can either connect to the firewall or the dash bar but not both
ii. They may not be welded any lower than 6” down the firewall.
g. NO FRESH UNDERCOATING
4. Car Identification
a. A 12” x 12” rooftop number is mandatory, securely fastened to the top of the car. This is
so the judges and announcers don’t get your car confused if the numbers on your doors
become unreadable.
b. Your number must also be on both the passenger & driver side doors.
5. Drivetrain Modifications
a. Changing of motors, transmissions, and rearends is allowed.
b. All motors must run on gasoline or diesel.
c. Rearend may be welded to make posi-traction.
i. Hybrid Rearends OK
ii. No floater or 8 bolt wheel rears are allowed.
d. Transmission cooler may be used.
e. A floor shifter may be used for transmission.
f. Slider driveshafts OK.
g. The cooling system must remain stock and in stock location and the heater core is to be
disconnected.
h. Headers maybe used in place of manifolds.
i. Engine cradles are permitted but must not attach in such a way as to reinforce the frame.
Judges decision on this is final.
6. Motor Mount Chains
a. Engine chains cannot be welded to frame, but can be welded to engine crossmember.
b. You can weld 2” wide strap across the rubber part of motor mounts to make them solid.
c. Broken motor mounts can have fabricated mount that attaches to engine cross member,
but not to frame rail.
d. Distributor guards are allowed but must have 1” gap between firewall and protector
during inspection. Firewall cannot be reinforced.
7. Suspension Modifications
a. Rear trailing arms can be reinforced. (May be shortened / lengthened as needed)
b. You cannot weld on the A-arms.
c. Rear coil springs may be fastened on each end (wire, chain, hose clamps, etc.).
d. Rearend may be chained or wired to frame hump (1 chain per side only)
i. Chain may be fastened through hump with ½” bolt or may weld one link to the
hump. (3/8” chain max)
e. Leaf spring cars
i. 6 spring fasteners per side.
ii. Tape will be counted as a fastener
iii. Stock springs only
iv. May not make a coil-spring car a leaf-spring car (ie. No leaf conversions)
f. Car suspension must have bounce (No Solid Suspension).
g. Steering may be modified as needed, however lower A frames must remain stock.
8. Body Mounts
a. Redi-rod is permitted in front body mounts. No space is mandatory between radiator
support (core support) and frame.
b. Body mount spacers can be removed. Body may be bolted solid. Up to 1” redi-rod can be
used in place of body bolts. Body bolts must go inside of the frame and be fastened inside
the car with a nut with a maximum of 4” diameter washer underneath.
c. Redi-rod used in the core support and trunk mounts can go through frame and be used to
fasten hood & trunk lid.
d. All redi-rod must go through existing body mount holes (except in trunk).
i. Two redi-rod in trunk may also connect sheet metal to sheet metal (ie. trunk lid
to trunk floor)
9. Window Nets
a. Driver’s side only
b. May only go 6” past driver’s door seam. Do not make full length, even on 2 doors.
10. Safety Cage & Rollover bar (See attached picture)
a. All bars must be straight, no curved or bent bars
b. May have 2 side bars (length wise)
c. May have 3 cross bars (width wise)
d. Side bars may be welded to the front of the rear
fender wells
e. Rear cross bar may not touch rear speaker deck
or package tray area
f. May have halo (rollover) bar that must connect
to safety cage bars only, not to the floor or
frame.
11. Doors
a. Fasteners must be chains, bolts, or #9 wire.
b. Must have 2 fasteners minimum per door.
i. If your door comes open during the derby, you will be DQ’d
c. No extra bolts inside doors. Go easy on the sheet metal screws or you will be taking them
out! We don’t want them falling out on the racetrack.

f. You may remove hinges and install bolts in rear of hood
g. Extra unlimited 3/8” bolts, stamped washers, chain, and unlimited #9 wire can be used to
hold hood sheet metal together.
13. Trunk
a. One (1) six by six (6x6) inch hole must be cut in trunk for inspection.
b. Trunk Fasteners (6 total).
i. 6” Diameter washers maximum
ii. Hinges count as fasteners
iii. All-thread can go through the frame but must go through a stock body mount
location, except Unibody cars, all-thread can go through the frame without body
mount.
c. Deck lids in rear of station wagons must be removed.
d. Extra unlimited 3/8” bolts, stamped washers, chain, and unlimited #9 wire can be used to
hold trunk sheet metal together.
e. You may tuck the trunk.
14. Bumpers & Brackets
a. Brackets and shocks can be welded with maximum 3/8” bead, no added iron, and must
remain in OEM location.
b. Chrome maybe beat down and welded on bumper.
c. Bumper Shocks must be of OEM application and car & make.
i. Chevy on Chevy, Chrysler on Chrysler, Ford on Ford, etc.
d. You may use 2” wide by ¼” thickness metal strap to square up the frame horns if
hardnosing, this shall only be used to wrap the last 2” of the frame to create a square
mounting surface. This iron CANNOT be used anywhere else or for any other purpose.
i. If you are shortening the frame horns before mounting your bumper, this strap
cannot be located under or behind the core support.
e. Brackets must attach in front of core support in stock location (not to be wrapped around
the crash point of the frame)
f. Bumpers cannot be relocated inside of car body.
15. Tires and Wheels
a. Doubled tires OK
b. Tubed tires OK
c. Foam filled tires OK
d. No screwed or metal studded tires allowed
e. Do not have to have DOT stamp on them
f. Unlimited size
g. No 8 bolt wheels.
16. Frame Repair
a. There is to be no frame repair at all.
